Mr. Velociraptor

The following is a poem I wrote in 11th grade. Mr. Clausen, my English professor, had us submit the poems we wrote in class to the Sun Magazine (an annual, regional arts magazine for DoDs schools). Mine was selected to be published that year. I'm grateful to Mr. Clausen for having us send those poems in; it helped me realize that you actually CAN get stuff (like an ounce of recognition and a free copy of the magazine) for writing poetry.

Mr. Velociraptor

I once knew a velociraptor who wore a top hat
This dainty soul was a genuine aristocrat.
He spent his days reading cultural literature,
Through his small spectacled eyeglass fixture.

One day, he came up to a fellow of his,
He in said a mellow tone of businiz:
“Good day to you sir, what a fine life to live,
Being a dromaeosaurid in this wonderful civ.”

To the astonishment of Mr. Velociraptor's felicity
The raptor roared rather raucously,
The carnivore bellowed a terrible noise,
A barbaric action that upset Mr. V's poise.

Mr. Velociraptor ran circles in a flurry,
Frightened out of his wits, he dashed off in a hurry,
And from this event, did surmise in his head:
“I'm quite ahead of my time, by many a Jurrasic period.”
